Using the EarthOne Grow App

How is the Grow app organised?

  • A garden is your place. You can also be invited into other people's gardens.
  • A spot is a location inside a garden, such as a kitchen, balcony, shelf or greenhouse.
  • A plant lives in a spot.
  • A plant monitor is paired to your garden and linked to a plant.

Each plant has its own Metrics, Journal, Guide, Details and Settings.

What is the plant health score?

A score from 0 to 100 that shows how close your plant's conditions are to the ideal range for its
species. Soil moisture and light count the most, then temperature and humidity. The score changes as
conditions change, after you water, and as new readings arrive, so day-to-day movement is normal.

What are VPD and GDD?

VPD (vapor pressure deficit) combines temperature and humidity into one number that shows how much
drying pressure the air puts on your plant. It is a better guide to comfort than temperature or
humidity alone.

GDD (growing degree days) is the heat a plant has accumulated over time. For edible and
harvestable plants, the Grow app uses it to estimate when your plant will be ready to harvest.

Can I change the ideal ranges for my plant?

Yes. Every plant starts with the ideal ranges for its species. To set your own, open the plant's
Settings, tap Thresholds, choose Custom, adjust the values and tap Save Thresholds.

What is BOTanist?

BOTanist is EarthOne's plant-care AI, inside the Grow app. It can:

  • Identify a plant from a photo
  • Diagnose plant health problems from a photo (Plant Doctor)
  • Give care advice for one of your plants using its recent readings
  • Answer general plant care questions

Free accounts include 5 plant identifications and 5 BOTanist chats a day; members get more.
Plant Doctor needs a membership. See Becoming A Member.

How do I log watering and other care?

Open the plant's Journal and add an entry. You can log watering, fertilising, repotting, pruning,
misting, rotating, moving, harvesting, new leaves, fallen leaves, blossoming, propagating or a note,
with photos.

You do not have to log watering. The Grow app detects most waterings automatically from the shape of
the soil moisture readings, so you may see a watering entry you did not add.

How do I turn plant notifications on or off?

The Grow app alerts you when a plant's soil moisture is too low and when a monitor's battery is low.
Open the plant's Settings:

  • Notifications switches each alert type on or off for that plant.
  • Notification Time sets the hour of the day you receive them.

How do I share my garden with someone?

In the Grow app, choose Invite To Garden and enter the person's email or EarthOne handle. If they
do not have an account yet, they get an email to create one. Once they accept, it can take up to
1 hour for them to appear in your garden. You can take someone out of your garden at any time
with Remove From Garden.

How do I see my plant's history?

Open the plant's Metrics to see its graphs. How far back your data goes depends on your plan:
up to 6 months on a free account, up to 2 years with Essential, and any time in the past with
Pro. Past plant health scores are included with a membership.

Can I export my plant data?

Yes, with a membership. Open a plant's graph and tap Download Metrics to get its readings as a CSV
file.

What are automations?

An automation runs an action when a plant's reading crosses a value you choose, for example when soil
moisture drops below a level. Free accounts get 1 automation per device, Essential 10 and
Pro 25.

Does EarthOne work with smart home devices?

Yes. EarthOne works with IFTTT and Home Assistant. Through Home
Assistant, it connects to Apple HomeKit, Google Home and Amazon Alexa.

Connecting to IFTTT needs an Essential membership or higher. You can then use your plants'
readings in applets with other smart home services.

How do I get a harvest estimate?

Open the plant's Settings and set its Seed Date. For harvestable plants with a temperature
reading, the Grow app estimates the days left to harvest and tells you when harvest is near. When
you harvest, tap Harvest Plant in the plant's Settings. This resets the seed date, GDD and
harvest estimate so a new cycle can start.

Can I change how often my monitor sends readings?

By default, a monitor sends readings every 20 minutes. With a membership, the garden's owner can
make updates less frequent: open the monitor in the Grow app, tap Device Settings and set the
Update Rate anywhere from 20 to 60 minutes. Updates cannot be made more frequent than every
20 minutes.

Can I access my data through an API?

Yes, with a Pro membership. Create a personal API token on the
Developers page; the API reference is linked from there.
Treat a token like a password, and delete it from the same page if it leaks.
