Understanding the LED Lights on Your Plant Monitor
Your EarthOne Plant Monitor has a single LED that tells you what the device is doing. The same light
means different things depending on its colour and how often it flashes. This article explains
every state.
What does each light mean?
What you see | What it means |
|---|---|
Orange flashing every few seconds | The device is in pairing mode and ready to be added in the app |
Orange comes on once briefly, then goes dark | The device is powered on |
Light stays on for a short while just after pairing | The device is updating itself — do not press the power button |
A brief blink roughly every 20 minutes | The device is uploading its readings, then returning to sleep |
No light at all when you press the power button | The battery is likely flat — charge the device |
Red while plugged in to charge | The device is charging |
Green while plugged in to charge | The device is fully charged |
No red or green light when plugged in | The power adapter is not compatible |
How do I tell pairing mode from normal operation?
By how fast the light flashes. Both states show an orange light, which is the single most common
source of confusion:
- Pairing mode — the light flashes every few seconds, over and over. The device is waiting to
be added in the app.
- Normal operation — the light is dark almost all the time, with one brief blink **roughly every
20 minutes** when the device uploads its readings.
If you are seeing a repeated flash every few seconds, your device is in pairing mode and has not been
set up yet.
Does flashing orange mean my device is offline?
No. An orange flash every few seconds means the device is in pairing mode, waiting to be added in
the app. It does not indicate an internet or Wi-Fi problem.
This matters because the two situations need opposite actions. A device in pairing mode is waiting for
you to add it in the app. A device that is paired but cannot reach your network does not sit in a
repeated orange flash — it has already left pairing mode.
If your device is flashing every few seconds and you expected it to be set up already, it has dropped
back to pairing mode and needs to be paired again. See Setting Up Your Device.
My device's light went off after pairing. Is something wrong?
No, that is the expected behaviour. Once pairing finishes, the light stays on briefly while the
device updates itself, then switches off on its own. The device is asleep, not broken.
Do not press the power button while the light is on just after pairing. Pressing it during the
update can interrupt the process.
Why does the light blink on its own every so often?
That blink is the device uploading its readings. The Plant Monitor takes and sends readings every
20 minutes, sleeping in between to save battery. You do not need to do anything.
The light never comes on when I press the power button
The battery is almost certainly flat. Charge the device and watch for the charging light:
- Plug the device in using the included USB-C cable and a compatible 5W (5V, 1A) power adapter.
- Look for a red light — this confirms the device is charging.
- Wait for the light to turn green, which means it is fully charged.
- Press the power button again.
If no red or green light appears when you plug it in, the adapter is not compatible. Fast
charging and high-wattage adapters do not work with the Plant Monitor. See Charging & Battery
for compatible adapter specifications.
EarthOne does not include a power adapter with the Plant Monitor — only the USB-C cable. Any
standard 5W (5V, 1A) adapter will work.
My light behaves differently from all of these
Record a short video of the device showing the light behaviour, then start a chat with us and attach
it. A video of the light is the fastest way for us to identify the state.
If you are also having trouble pairing, see Why Won't My Device Pair? first — most unexpected
light behaviour turns out to be a pairing-mode question.
