# Why Won't My Device Pair?

If your EarthOne Plant Monitor will not pair, or the app cannot find it, work through this article in
order. Most pairing failures come down to one of four things: the device is off, it is not in pairing
mode, it is still linked to another account, or it is on a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network.

## How do I put my device into pairing mode?

**Power cycle the device 5 times.** The device is in pairing mode when the orange light is **flashing
every few seconds**.

A new device arrives already in pairing mode, so this step is only needed if the device has been
paired before or has dropped out of pairing mode.

You can pair a device as many times as you need, as long as it is in pairing mode.

## Is my device actually turned on?

This is the most common cause, and it is easy to miss. Press the power button once: **an orange light
should briefly flash and then go away.** That flash confirms the device is on.

If no light appears at all, the battery is flat. Charge the device until the light turns from red to
green, then try again. See **Charging & Battery**.

## The app says it cannot find my device

Check these in order:

1. **Confirm the device is in pairing mode** — the orange light must be flashing every few seconds.
If it is not, power cycle the device 5 times.
2. **Confirm the device is turned on** — press the power button once and look for the brief orange
   flash.
3. **Confirm your Wi-Fi network is 2.4 GHz.** The Plant Monitor does not support 5 GHz networks.
4. **Move the device closer to your router** and to the phone you are pairing from.
5. **Close and reopen the app**, then start the pairing flow again.

## My Wi-Fi is 5 GHz. What do I do?

The Plant Monitor connects to **2.4 GHz Wi-Fi networks only**. It cannot join a 5 GHz network.

If your router broadcasts both bands under the same network name, the device should find the 2.4 GHz
band automatically. If it does not, you may need to temporarily separate the bands into two network
names in your router settings, then pair the device to the 2.4 GHz one.

## My device keeps flashing orange and never pairs

An orange flash every few seconds means the device is in pairing mode and waiting to be added in the
app — so the device is doing its part. The problem is on the app or network side:

1. Confirm your phone is connected to a **2.4 GHz** Wi-Fi network, not a 5 GHz one or mobile data.
2. Move the device and your phone within a few feet of the router.
3. Force-close the app and reopen it, then restart the pairing flow.
4. Power cycle the device 5 times to re-enter pairing mode cleanly, and try again.

If it still fails, record two short videos — one of your screen during pairing, one of the device's
light at the same time — and send them to us in chat. They can be separate videos.

## I paired this device on another account and now it won't pair to my new one

A device stays linked to the account it was paired to, and the app will not pair it to another
account until it has been **unpaired** from the first one. To move it:

1. Sign in to the **old account** and unpair the device in the app.
2. **Power cycle the device 5 times** to put it back into pairing mode.
3. Pair it from the new account.

If you can no longer sign in to the old account, start a chat with us and include the device's
**serial number** so our team can help you move it.

**Note:** unpairing does **not** erase the Wi-Fi credentials stored on the device. Only re-entering
pairing mode resets those.

## I paired successfully but no data is showing in the app

This is expected shortly after setup. The Plant Monitor uploads its readings **every 20 minutes** and
sleeps in between, so **allow at least 20 minutes** for the first readings to appear. The light
switching off after pairing is normal and means the device has gone to sleep.

You will see a brief blink roughly every 20 minutes when the device uploads. See **Understanding the
LED Lights**.

If nothing has arrived after a few hours, start a chat with us and include your device serial number.

## Nothing here worked

Start a chat with us and include:

- Your device **serial number**
- What the **light** is doing (flashing every few seconds, one brief flash, nothing at all)
- Whether your Wi-Fi is **2.4 GHz or 5 GHz**
- A **screen recording** of the app during pairing, and a **video of the device** at the same time

With those, we can usually identify the problem on the first reply. If the device turns out to be
faulty, our team will tell you what happens next.
